Out.com polled the greatest and gayest (sorry) famous people they could reach for a definitive (?) list of the “Gayest Albums of All Time”. I don’t know even know what I could do with that without being a) offensive or b) reverting to a 13 year old version of myself, so here you go:
To create our list of the 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums of All Time, we polled more than 100 actors, comedians, musicians, writers, critics, performance artists, label reps, and DJs, asking each to list the 10 albums that left the most indelible impressions on their lives. After receiving responses from Boy George, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, Candis Cayne, Perez Hilton, Nate Berkus, Jake Shears, John Cameron Mitchell, Wilson Cruz, Justin Bond, Darren Hayes, Junior Vasquez, Bruce Vilanch, Janis Ian, the Cliks, Ari Gold, Holly Johnson, and a slew of others, we tallied the results to determine our top-100 list. OK, I’ll bite: why Sgt. Pepper? Anyone? Anyone?

Mr. Kite and his trampoline…not quite what they seem??

I am totally in favor of the Beatles punning.
When I’m Sixty-Four… perhaps states will quash legislation preventing homosexuals from getting married.
And the easiest one of all: Fixing a Hole.

I had to check my music library. According to this list I am 27% GAY. I don’t see my pick for Gayest Album of All Time. It deserves a Faaabulous Shout Out. It is…JAZZ by Queen. Don’t Stop Me Now? Let me Entertain You? Begging for Jazzhands! Close Second- Marc Almond (Soft Cell) The Stars We Are. Kept Boy? I rest my case.

Nick Drake’s Bryter Later is another head-scratcher…Was Hazy Jane…a man???

One last gay thought: It would be cool to list the gayest SONGS of all time. The other day I was listening to 69 Love Songs and decided that “The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side” is the gayest song on a record that does not lack for them.
david k- February 6, 2009 @ 1:18 pm
Is that a tease for your next foray after numerology?
Merry Swankster- February 6, 2009 @ 4:18 pm
That’s beyond my abilities. Someone better qualified than I should do it though. (I’m sure “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood would be in the Top 10.)
david k- February 7, 2009 @ 9:41 am
I don’t see how you top “Fabulous Muscles” by Xiu Xiu. Although that seems to go above and beyond just describing a gay relationship and into super-freakdom. “Personal” by the Ballet is fairly explicit of a more normal interaction, I’d say. “I saw you on Gaydar…” is a tough first line to misconstrue. The Ripping Vinyl sbject, “Homosapien” by Pete Shelley is pretty on the nose, as well.
Jeff Klingman- February 7, 2009 @ 1:32 pm
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that we are well qualified for this task. Good choices. “Homo superior/in my interior..” The Ballet song for sure. (the album too). Could be funny to post a Top 10 fave gay songs….
david k- February 7, 2009 @ 1:45 pm
This is a noble undertaking, Dave, but “Underwear” is the gayest song on 60 Love Songs.
Randall Monty- February 7, 2009 @ 5:26 pm
69… you know what I mean.
Randall Monty- February 7, 2009 @ 5:27 pm
It’s up there, for sure, but he does give equal time to “a pretty girl’ in her underwear, along with a pretty boy. Whereas Luckiest Guy is guy-centric in the extreme, and sports a totally fey melody. Without the boy references, “Underwear” doesn’t announce itself as gay, whereas Luckiest Guy, even without the words, just makes you want to skip around and pick flowers.
