Here’s an amazing, breathtaking really, video of the National performing “Mr. November” at Lollapalooza. Watch and be rewarded with excellent video of Mr. Berninger vamping across and over the stage before serenading a little girl (cute daughter of the blogger I excerpted below) while making his way through an impassioned crowd. This video is like the needle in the haystack that all concert vid takers hope to find. A mix of the National’s subdued flair and a good dose of serendipity allows a document for posterity of Berninger making his way right past the shooter as the climax of “Mr. November” is reached, his grizzled singing joined by a congregation of fervent fans assisting. Loose, wild, dangerous, intense, beautiful, and inspiring. This is what the live music experience is all about.
The National – “Mr. November” – Live @ Lollapalooza
My wife texted me and said she (with a little help from her friends) got up on the stage left terrace. After we made our way over there, my brother noticed Matt [Berninger ] (the singer) from The National had climbed off the stage and was in the crowd. Cool. Matt then climbed up on the terrace. Even Cooler. He then meandered over to my daughter, crouched down, grabbed her hand and sang part of “Mr. November” to her, even cleaning up the lyrics because he was singing to a 4 year old. She wasn’t scared at all. She just smiled at him. What a kid.
