Flaming Lips Set Release Date for "At War With the Mystics", Single Details

Psychedelic space freaks, The Flaming Lips, have announced that their next album will be released on April 4, 2006. Billboard reports that the first single will be "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" which will be released on March 27 in the UK. No word on Karen O apologies or Stateside release dates.

Coyne did however discuss how the single's inspiration came via a recent cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that appeared on a Queen tribute album (Killer Queen on Hollywood Records).

"We were perfectly able to conquer the challenges Queen presented, so [drummer] Steven Drozd continued doing these strange vocal arrangements of him singing into a microphone 30 times or something. We took that vocal treatment and made a song out of it. It ends up being a self-empowering thing - almost like an MC5 thing, but it's not talking about external things. It's talking about the power within you. What would you do if you had the power?"

Not only does this pose the crazy scenario of MC5 turning into hippie space rockers via the Lips, but adds insight to the new album's sound in addition to what the Merry Swankster reported last month. Having seen the spectacle that was Bohemian Rhapsody performed live in San Diego over the summer, I will sleep soundly knowing new Flaming Lips material is on its way.

Other tracks from "At War With the Mystics" include "The W.A.N.D.", "Space Bible", "Time Travel??" and the (previously reported) "You Gotta Hold On".
