MS Daily Pick - Baxter Dury - Fungus Hedge

(The Daily Pick may or may not be very daily. Lets see how this week goes.)

Baxter Dury - Fungus Hedge (mp3)

According to his Rough Trade bio,

"when Baxter was fifteen, his dad went away for a year to do a film with Roman Polanski, leaving his teenage son to be looked after by ex Led Zeppelin roadie and Blockhead minder the 'Sulphate Strangler'."
BEST SOPHOMORE YEAR EVER.

Even if it wasn’t a teenage Sodom and Gomorrah, it was surely an interesting job history for this nanny. Imagine the stories for a virgin young mind, "Tell me the one about Zeppelin and the fish uncle Strangler!"

Fungus Hedge sounds like it could live on a b-side version of the White Album. Baxter Dury hangs his vowels adding a smooth psychedelic effect to his singing. The words envelope the music and become fused with the music like an integrated instrument. Only under careful listening does a story concerning Mrs. & Mr. Hedge emerge. Dark and lovely.
