MS Daily Pick - 12/8/80 Radio Scans the Night John Lennon Died
These two streams are radio scans from LA & NY radio stations the night John Lennon was killed (from WFMU via Fluxblog). For someone who in 1980 was literally walking his first steps, it is chilling to hear this (sad) snapshot of history. Its easy to remember that at the time people still held out hope for a full Beatles reunion.
I picked up on this quote from the NYC stream. The DJ reads a Playboy interview in which John Lennon was asked about death in terms of Neil Young's famous words. Lennon said:
"I hate it. That its better to fade away like an old soldier then to burn out. I don't appreciate worship of dead. Sid Vicious or of dead James Dean or of dead John Wayne. Its the same thing making Sid Vicious a hero. Jim Morrison is garbage to me. I worship the people who survive."
Fluxblog also posted a MP3 of Matthew Sweet covering She Said, She Said. The Merry Swankster suggests you check it out.
That will be it regarding John Lennon for today. If still hungry for more check out this Rolling Stone piece.
