Pink Mountaintops – Plastic Man You’re the Devil | Apocalypse Now
Emulsifying legendary rock and rollers into one sentence to lazily describe the sound of a present-day outfit is just that – lazy. Its easy to do with the Pink Mountaintops an inversion, in perhaps name only, of Black Mountain.
Sarah at AAMV and Pink Mountaintops frontman Stephen McBean discussing influences:
”Your web presences list this project [Pink Mountaintops, s/t 2004] as inspired by mixing sunrise, highways, Pink Floyd, and trucker speed…”
I’ve never seen Pink Mountaintops live, something I will remedy very soon (Tour dates - Worth mentioning are the dates that New York gets with the Après-Pink Mountaintops bonus Flaming Lips headlining.) Until this for the moment anticipated show becomes a memory, the flying Blackhawk helicopters that I envision sixteen seconds into “Plastic Man, You’re the Devil” will remain hovering menacingly and this song will continue to haunt me.
Pink Mountaintops - Plastic Man, You’re the Devil
An awesomely psychedelic harmonica serves the jittery release out from the chorus, cutting through the track like an epic hangover aggravated by a small earthquake. A seismic event that normally and without a previous evening’s bacchanal excess would be shaken off, if felt at all. Here jolts the literal core of the song.
Psychedelia, (apropos of Grateful Dead referencing cover) meet political satire.
Axis of Evil
Won't Smoke that shit you're on
Mary can't save you
Jesus won't take your hand
Lest I not mention the gonna-pass-on-the-schwag-this-round “won't smoke that shit you’re on” excellent money line.
For a band to go from such sexually provocative songs like "Sweet '69" and "I (fuck) Mountains," to doobiefyng the administration's foreign policy is quite the accomplishment.
For this Stephen McBean is the greatest Canadian I know hailing from Vancouver, and wins Merry Swankster's inaugural Canadian of the Day Award [note – I don’t know anyone from Vancouver, including McBean].
Subtleness was never a requirement for discontent. Subtleness and contempt, practically antonyms. Black vs. Pink? Let’s not get cute.
The MP3 isn’t the greatest quality. But the CD comes out tomorrow so just buy it.
