Retrohump Day - We All Come From Somewhere
Fellow MS.com'er Jeff and I have been digging on the Long Blondes. I personally have a storied history of loving punkish female singers/bands. So here is a precursory Venn diagram for the Long Blondes, who easily straddle the line between melody and grit; tenderness and moxy forthrightness and coyness.
The Ronettes combine Phil Spector's preternatural gift for melody with Ronnie Spector's mellifluous voice. They provide the tender ethos.
Here they are (presumably during better times) performing two classic songs.
The Ronnettes: Be My Baby and Shout!
We all know what happened to the Pixies. While Sonic Youth has had its share of conflict, it has managed to stave off breaking up through its history and avoid the male-female, creative tension that wrought the "death to the Pixies."
This pavement-surf(ing) rock joint provides the edge component to the Long Blondes.
Sonic Youth: Bull in the Heather
Quite simply, the Long Blondes want you to be their baby, but not if you're bringing all that typical bullshit.

Did anybody else catch Rory Gilmore Rocking Out! to "Bull in the Heather" last night? Or am I the only embarrassing one?
