A Sunny Day in Glasgow, on a Hazy Day in New York

A Sunny Day in Glasgow is the day dream monicker of a studio project by Philly bound muso, Ben Daniels. While moonlighting from his other band, heavy psych merchants King Kong Ding Dong, Ben enlisted his sisters Robin and Lauren to provide woozy multi tracked vocals that are then layered with loosely sculpted beats, keys, guitar, and general noise to create the delicious pop lasagna of the self-released the Sunniest Day Ever EP. Assembling compositions from musical fragments rather than amping up the cute call and response quotient, ASDIG manages to make indie pop sound odd and intriguing, which at this late date is about as rare as the afforementioned break in Glaswegian cloud cover.
(Quick aside: Wouldn't be ironic if the longest lasting influence of Jack White is not in inspiring interest in stripped down blues rock, but in helping indie musicians realize that their sisters are captive female vocalists that are obligated to be nice to them?)
A Sunny Day in Glasgow - "A Mundane Phone Call to Jack Parsons"
A typically dense outing, starting with the girls harmonizing a test pattern tone and quickly segueing into a loud booming drum pattern. Guitar, both in soft ringing and ominous white noise form whooshes around the vocal refrain as complementary elements bleed in and out of the mix as they please. On a casual listen over dinner, my girlfriend commented that something about it reminded her of the Raincoats. While multiple, guileless female vocals are certainly a suspect, I think it probably has more to do with the sense that the song remains cohesive despite being composed of elements that seem very loosely bound to one another. Like if you put four or five low-watt college radio stations in the same room and they kept synching up to make compelling original compositions.
