Art Brut - Live @ Hi-Dive, Denver, CO, 05.05.06

Ready Art Brut?!

Evidently, The Darkness do not monopolize all the hilariousness in contemporary rock. How riotous can rock ‘n roll be? Art Brut live, let us count the ways.

Getting onto the stage at the Mile High city’s aptly named Hi-Dive requires navigating through the crowd and literally jumping up from the front. No backstage walkways that I could see. A prissier artist may complain. Mustached singer, Art Brut ringleader, and focal point for hilarity, Eddie Argos, didn’t mind. He would end back on the floor among the common folk later in the evening anyway. Isn’t Cinco de Mayo the Mexican holiday when musicians join the common folk? Ole!

From the familiar notes of AC/DC’s “Back in Black” show opener, Art Brut laid it on thick. In (mostly) their own words, Art Brut @ Denver’s Hi-Dive – Cinco de Mayo, 2006:

Dry air and high altitude may have effected the band's memory. Forgetting that “Formed a Band” has two verses, Art Brut performed a newly edited version for Denver. Argos hammed it up and playfully chastised the band before launching into a sweet a cappella version of the omitted verse.

“We’re going to be the band
That writes the song
That makes Israel and Palestine
Get along

We’re going to write a song
As universal as Happy Birthday
That's make sure
That everybody knows
That everything's gonna be ok
We’re going to take that song
And we're gonna play it
Eight weeks in a row on Top of the Pops!”

The Violent Femme’s “Gone Daddy Gone” bells on guitar, and Velvet Undergrond hating of “Bang Bang Rock and Roll” led to a pitchfork referencing ad lib, and self-commentary from Argos:

“Our album out on May 23 I read on Pitchfork…sounds like Jesus and Mary Chain up here.”

Can’t-get-it-up ode “Rusted Guns of Milan” is “A sad song about sex," says Argos. “Post Smoothing Out,” one of a three new songs, was introduced as “a song about drunken text messaging.” Merry Swankster can relate, allegedly of course. I have an image to uphold. Sample lyrics: “Everyday is just like starting over/ We try so hard but we keep on falling over.” Sad no?

"Blame it on the Trains,' and “St. Pauli” rounded out the non album tracks. “Emily Kane” came next. “I was sixteen and madly in love with Emily Kane. Later in life I realized I was in love with being in love” he explains.

Fuck pop culture and you have “Bad Weekend.” Argos banter: “Make something to show me, us. I’m turning into a hippie.”

“18,000 Lira” - “The state of the Euro, apparently.”

“Good Weekend" - “This is our last song. #1 in Japan! Germany! After last nights Jimmy Kimmel…#1 in the US!” The song was fitting because this preposterous start to the weekend guaranteed its goodness. I’ve seen her naked twice!
