So, as we wait with baited breath for the comprehensive Coachella rundown, I thought I'd help you kill some time on the internet by reporting how I am killing time on the internet. So simple, it's actually incredibly lazy.
- I noticed this morning that Pitchfork declined to give Sunset Rubdown's Shut Up I Am Dreaming a release day review in lieu of a review of the new Tool album. Priorities, people. Double shun, as Coolfer refused to even include it in its list of new releases. Luckily, Bows + Arrows steps into the vacuum to give us a plethora of Canadian rockin'. Highlights include SR versions of "I am a Runner" (weird), and "I'll Believe in Anything" (lovely and piano minded), a semi-obscure Wolf Parade cover, and the realization that I apparently didn't search hard enough for the title of the previously posted "untitled" Handsome Furs track, which is very much titled "Dumb Animals." And since no one else loves you, I'll give a reminder that you can now buy the Rubdown album here . 'Tis Awesome.
- About a week ago, Dreams of Horses had a decent live recording of a new Xiu Xiu track, "Boy Soprano," soon to be included in the forthcoming the Air Force LP. It's Jamie Stewart's sidekick Caralee's turn to shine, and while it's hard to know what kind of sonic distress will be inflicted upon the recorded version, it does live up to Jamie's claim that the Fall release would be the catchiest thing the band has done. Which is exactly what I wanted to hear. MP3 link here.
- A couple things of note from Black Baloon. First, is the bonus track stateside buyers of Show Your Bones were oddly denied. Called "Deja Vu", the song would have been a much needed injection of RAWK for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs latest. Second, we have a brand new Black Mountain number, off the upcoming Invaders compilation that I could generally give a shit about. But thanks for "Behind the Fall" .
- Brooklyn Vegan today unearthed an obscured link to a pageful of rarities from Austin fey factory, Voxtot. Of note for our purposes is a cover of the New Order classic "Love Vigilantes" recorded at a show that I actually attended. I never wrote it up, because I felt that it, like the band itself, was perfectly enjoyable but not so awesome that I want to be evangelically enthusiastic.
And I do have a life outside of you kids, you know.
