Boy Least Likely To Cover "Faith" | Video
Boy Least Likely To - Faith (Live in Boulder, CO 6.6.06)
Every female born after 1975 has (a) – performed George Michael's "Faith" at a karaoke bar; (b)- sang with drunk girlfriends at a bar, dancing in a circle while spilling along; or (c) – done either of the previous two things while at a panty slumber party with her friends. I suppose if you are a gay man the same situations apply. The track is a formidable force not recommended for interruption during that last half hour before closing time.
A duality exists when covering such well known songs in a live setting. Either ironic joke, Art Brut kicking shows off with Metallica’s "Enter Sandman", or as a representative song complementing the coveree’s sound through interpretation of another artist. Sleater Kinney’s version of "Mother" by Danzig was initially a hysterical joke, but given the grrrls stock in heavy rock on The Woods it was certainly a sincere gesture rather than the tongue in cheek gaffe setlists would lead you to believe. Sometimes a cover plays to both ends of this interpretative theory.
BLLT place one leg in both the jokey & earnestness camps when it comes to covering George Michael. It allows BLLT to be whimsical, funny, and cute - an accurate portrayal they'll get anyhow, but the words pertaining to pushing lovers away while holding onto hope of future love fits well with the Boy Least Likely To platform.
