Jarvis Cocker Celebrates Ten Years of Fighting For Justice by Being a Prick

Several outlets have noted on the arrival of a new Jarvis Cocker solo song, the first since the disbanding of Britpop's creepy uncle Pulp. His track, a response to the empty sloganeering of Live 8, formerly titled "Cunts are Still Running the World" (such a good title, that I prefer to stick with it) can be found here, for instance. Good show, Cocker.

Live 8 sort of bugged me too. "Hoorah it's the Scissor Sisters, take that crippling poverty! Phew, we really showed poverty didn't we? Let's have a glass of Cristal. O.K. Let's."

But, Cocker has never been one to respect sanctimonious pop stars and their deeeeeep empathy for the World's problems. Although a big scandal in Britain that cemented Jarvis as a tabloid seller, the 1996 drunken barnstorming of Michael Jackson's performance of "Earth Song" at that year's Brit awards didn't make much of a dent into the American consciousness. If only there were a website that could play any obscure piece of footage ever captured...

Later, the Cock would say that Jackson's messianic pose and the cloying sentimentality of all the children uniting and giving praise to Jackson himself demanded an interruption. Maybe a blotto Cocker running around like Benny Hill being chased by security and waving his ass at the audience wasn't the most subtle interruption, but since Jacko's on top of a pneumatic crane, there's nothing he can do about it. As the lyrics of his new opus show, our man's retained this sort of understated dry British wit.
