Retrohump - Central Park Concerts

Whoa. Funny are the things you discover on Youtube when a question is pondered. What started as a request for clips of Simon & Garfunkel's Central Park performance turned into a video menagerie of artists performing the great lawn. Not the typical artists you see covered on this space, so you may use this as an opportunity to explain to your mother what a blog is.

Diana Ross - Opening segment 1983

Yesterday Koren, and today Diana makes her debut on Merry Swankster. I suppose this is one way to distinguish ourselves from other music blogs. Diana's entrance and montage is cool for the time capsule shots of Manhattan. Grainy New York video from the 70s and early 80s always reminds me of Dirty Harry movies.

Simon and Garfunkel - "Sound of Silence" 1981

Probably the most well known Central Park performance is Paul and Art's reunion in 1981. I swiped the CD of this show from my folks and remember getting the chills during the "10,000 people maybe more" line. Can't imagine what it must feel like for the performer.

Barbara Streisand - "Natural Sounds" 1967

Fun with analogies: If the previously noted use of My Bloody Valentine for explanatory purposes is an overused maxim, then this next cliché has no synonym for it's triteness. Amalgamation of a well known band and the term "on acid" to describe the sound of another band is a far worse abuse. That being said, Babs makes an appearance on Merry Swankster.com. Like MS on acid...zing! She was a looker in the '60s. I dig the girl-pop look. Does your mom know what a blog is yet?

Elton John - "Imagine" 1980

Elton John covering Lennon within earshot of John and Yoko's Dakota home. Sadly, three months after this concert John Lennon would be shot dead in front of that home. Anniversary of his death is this Friday. Sorry to end on a bummer.
