Black Lips - Live @ Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ - 12.29.2006
Last Friday's gig at Maxwell’s was, well, almost dignified by Black Lips standards. Which is to say, the Vice signees didn’t make out. Nor did they pee on stage. Nor did they pee in their own mouths in the manner that got them banned for life from Mercury Lounge.
That said, there was no shortage of gratitude (“Thanks to Live Fast Die for being the gayest band to ever open for us”); artistic disclaimers (“This song sucks-- It sounds good on the new record though”); and exposed genitalia (in the form of one pantsless, stage-bound gentleman who held his sausage hostage for most of "Freakout").
Amid the chaos, it was (as always) drummer Joe Bradley who kept straight the Lips’ impulsive set list. As guitarist Cole Alexander counted off “M.I.A.,” Joe reminded him, “We already played that song.”
All in all, it was an evening of glittering, gold-toothed garage-punk. And by the time the Lips reached their encoreless end, Jersey's favorite music joint was as humid and funky as a post-game locker room.
After the jump, you'll find more photographic evidence documenting the crime scene. I had to keep a somewhat safe distance from the real action. As it stands, I walked away from all that crowd thrashing with a very apt injury: a fat lip. It's not quite “black” yet, but purple. Further insanity...
