MS Picks: "We All Belong"
Let me count the ways in which I love Dr. Dog.
Truly, let me count them:
One: Love their names. "Tables?" "Text?" And let's not forget little "Taxi," who has always reminded me of Tom Petty in miniature.
Two: Love Frank. Who the band's stripped-down website describes as their "intern." Once, when I was futilely trying to locate a copy of the band's Psychedelic Swamp album--rumor has it, there are only 25 CDs in existence--sweet, little Frank the intern sent me a list (yes folks, an itemized list) of other records he thought I might enjoy in lieu of the rarity.
And three (above all else, three): Love that every Dr. Dog album makes me want to organize an impromptu bonfire. And who gives a shit if I live in New York City? Let's all meet up at the closed-for-the-season Shake Shack, light a Department of Parks and Recreation-owned trash can, roast some soy weenies and sing along to "Wake Up."
And, you know what else? I don't care if Dr. Dog's last EP Takers & Leavers wasn't quite 2005's Easy Beat. I invoke Joseph Heller, who when told Portrait of an Artist as an Old Man wasn't quite as spectacular as Catch 22, responded, "What is?" What is as good as Catch 22? What is as good as Easy Beat? Precious little, friends. Precious little.
But then, something tells me Dr. Dog's upcoming album We All Belong (release date: February 27th) just might do it.
Forget "Alaska," this song manages to reference the "hell" of Philadelphia, the cabins of Montana, and, most ingeniously, a dog who barks like he "thinks he's in the band." God help me, I like it already.
A few weeks back, Dr. Dog released an animated video for this friendly tune about redemption. Two words: dancing convicts. Check it out.
"Turns out cigarettes can kill you..." Perhaps the Surgeon General's warning would be more effective if it came with this rueful, little folkified soundtrack.
