Album Insanity - It begins
In short, this is a March Madness-styled tournament focusing on seminal 90s albums and populist nostalgia instead of basketball. You, the reader, will help determine which album goes onto the next round.

But first - the rules.
Each album will be contending for a majority of five possible points.
The winner of the community's vote - you can vote either in the comments or e-mail (keith.obrien@gmail.com) will receive two points. I will give out one point. Fellow MerrySwankster.com editors will combine to give out one point. The best argument made in the community, determined by MerrySwankster.com editors, will make up the fifth vote.
So, in essence, the community has the strongest vote. But only if you get out and vote!
Each matchup will feature its own post (you'll see that happen with the play-in game today).

wow... on ESPN the commentators are already over-hyping a Flaming Lips (4)-Soft Bulletin Vs. Beck Odelay (5) match-up in the second round of the Lou Reed Bracket after Wayne Coyne's harsh words for Beck after backing him on tour in '02. But lets not forget they have to get past worthy opponents Wilco and Outkast. So much drama!

Some of these seedings are suspect. Hole gets an eight seed despite being 0-12 in road/neutral games? Silver Jews a 15 seed? Shades of Richmond. OTC a 16 seed? They're they're from a two-bid conference! The 16 spot is saved for one-bid upset specials (like Niagara and Low). Waitaminute... Built to Spill's a 16 too... WTF?

Wouldn't be an accurate tourney without seeding controversy, but Tori Amos is definitely getting destroyed by Daft Punk. Vegas shouldn't even give odds on that one. Oh, and Hole is in trouble too, their MVP is out for the tourney with a gaping head injury...

I know the community isn't happy with a Built To Spill 16 seed, but unless we wanted to populate the tournament with 12-18 upsets in low conferences like Tennessee A&M (re: Green Day - Dookie), we had to make concessions. Built to Spill might have been left out. And, of course, that would cause a bigger fuss. Maybe a Hot Fuss.

Ahh..the 5-12 matchups. Vegas instincts and NCAA conventional wisdom says to bet on all 4 being upsets. I say at least 2, maybe 3 #12 seeds are locks to move on..but best to play it safe and cover yourself in case we have NIN goths infiltrate...
