Pixies rock all the time all the time. Too good. Too original.
Yo La at their best beat Pixies at being competent. Plus, there's no Pixies song as sweet and personal as "Autumn Sweater," their charms lie elsewhere.
VS
10. Sonic Youth- Goo
Overall Ranking: 40
[PF 82]
Key songs: Kool Thing, Dirty Boots
Year: 1990
Defeated 10 seed Ghostface Killah - Ironman 4-0
Defeated 15 seed PJ Harvey – Rid of Me 21-13
Comments
Best full album since daydream nation beats P.J. Harvey easily.
Cinderella in a filthy dress.

This one is tough, but let's remember that this is neither the best album from either band, nor the decade where they had most importance. But you don't question how albums made it to where they did; you just go with it.
As much as I like Kool Thing, I go with Bossanova.

It's the nostalgia game! Good luck convincing me that had these been the respective band's debuts that either one would have made the Sweet 16.
Now that BC, Holy Cross, UT, Corpus Christi, North Texas are all out of it, and Syracuse was never in it, I'm riding the A&M home team bandwagon. Likewise, I'm going with Bossanove in this match-up.

This is like the inevitable third round game every year where the teams that you were excited about watching took a dive and you're left with like, some third best major conference teams. Maryland versus Michigan State, or something, where neither team has any compelling stars. Meh.
Bossanova.
And Monty, I know it took SY a bit to warm up, but are you claiming no one would vote for Surfer Rosa? Or are you deriding Caribou? I'm a fan of either over Bossanova, really...

What I mean is if Goo and Bossanova where SY and Pixies debut albums, they wouldn't be historically regarded as dearly as they are here. We'd look at Goo as a solid, yet occasionally baffling album (a song about Karen Carptenter?), and not as the pop music evolution of an already established band.
Also, I am sweetly impressed with your Maryland/MichSt analogy.

Both Maryland and Michigan state are out so that doesn't bode well for either of these two albums advancing. And with that obvious comment - Pixies win a low scoring, turnover laden affair by 10 points, turned wide open only because of early fouling by SY in a wasted attempt to close in.

I see Bossanova more as akin to UCLA -- is this the best Bruins team we've seen? Not even close. Is it still better than most of the competition? Most definitely.
