Returning champ (read: Pitchfork champ) is one of the most recent picks might be more ingrained in one's mind than say, Nevermind. Prevailing favorite. Still people question whether they might have the stamina to repeat.

The best team to come out of a historic conference (Big East, rock) in awhile (at the time of the Surfer Rosa), but it's not the best team they've ever fielded.

I love Bossanova's hasty version of surf rock, but c'mon... OK Computer is a landmark album that influenced me to make many a beligerant claim of it being, "the greatest album of your lifetime!" This, in spite, or perhaps beacuse, of its lonely, wintery representation.

I've been a bit hard on Bossanova in these comments, even though I totally love it, but it's not the Pixies best and we are coming down to the wire here.
While I take the opinion that Kid A is actually a finer achievement, and the pinnacle of the band's career to date, rating OKC as one of the top four records of the decade is totally reasonable. True, even.
