Coachella: Day 1 (con't) - Jesus & Mary Chain, Interpol, Sonic Youth & Björk

Jesus & Mary Chain - Coachella stage

Jim Reid’s snarl indicated neither joy to be back onstage nor anything even remotely positive during a scorching set in which he asked the audience, “Are you having fun? Well we’ll see what we can do about that.” Proof positive the brothers’ mean edge has not dulled over the years.

If you haven’t heard by now a little known purportedly attractive actress sang backup during the last verse of “Just Like Honey.” You could barely hear it and she probably sang for a maximum of 10 seconds, but the soft harmony sounded right on. The entire set sounded good. Almost too good. I expected way more hissing. Maybe the J&MC are a pop band after all.

Two lovers join forces to repel everything J&MC can throw at them.
Interpol - Coachella stage

Interpol was one of Friday’s highlights for sure. Appearing uncomfortably comfortable with the expansive real estate the main stage provided the boys acted like they owned the place. Sounding great with no signs of rust they debuted a few new songs that showed great promise. I remember making a mental note regarding one of the new tunes: "sounds like muffled lasers with hand claps." Not sure what that was referring to exactly but I liked it then and I like it now. Their "hits" got a huge response, notably "Evil."
Depending on the strength/success of Our Love to Admire I predict they flirt with arenas by end of next year. Sad for those who prefer shows at smaller venues, but perfect for mass gatherings of moustache’d goth fans.

Sonic Youth - Outdoor stage

Kim Gordon [Photo cred]
MS camp hit the wall after Interpol and crashed hard on the crib of soft grass with the sounds of “Reena" ringing across the field. Great background music for our weary bodies to have Kim Gordon repeatedly sing “You keep me coming home again” like a gentle rock in the breezy Indio night. In this state of semi-consciousness it hit me that the guitar riff sounds suspicially lifted off “Gimme Shelter.” Only at Coachella could I have Sonic Youth sing me a lullaby. How about that?
Check out the handwritten setlist.
