Coverage of the 2007 Coachella festival continues.

Coachella: Day 1 (Part 1, 2)

Fratellis - Mojave tent

Combining standard 60s pop fare, nauseating 70s prog-cheese and rockabilly flourishes (?!) with yet another obvious cog from the 'Britain loves the Libertines' music machine and you get a recipe for boredom; Or the Fratellis. When the drummer contributes his part of the three part harmonies I could only think of indulgences and levels of suck not seen since the Eagles. More like Crapellis.

Regina Spektor - Coachella stage

Exceptionally smiley, proudly voluptuous, and lovely all around (save for a tendency to curse like a sailor). Spektor’s crimson hair and sharp, literary vocals deliver the Tori Amos references in multiple doses. Her peppiness and affability does quick work in extinguishing it.

Hot Chip - Mojave tent

Always nice to have options in the tents when seeking refuge from the scorching midday sun (Saturday high reached 106). Solar respite does not mean avoiding turning into a sweaty mess though. Especially when Hot Chip decides to host a midday dance party. High temperatures even in the shade make it impossible to not become a disgusting perspiration machine. Might as well dance and make it worth your while. Thank you Hot Chip for pulling off the impossible - a tent full of people getting their groove on before sundown.

Peter Bjorn & John - Mojave tent

I CAN'T HEAR YOU! PLEASE TURN IT UP! I think they made a joke about which guy was Peter, Bjorn and John but the sound was so low for the Swedish trio that only those at soundboard level or closer could hear anything. Warbled mix for the rest of us was criminal. We stuck it out for what was a reasonable amount of time for a remedied solution before cutting bait. Our buddy who got situated much closer tells us they were great.

I'm so bummed I missed Regina! She looks great up there! I did see Hot Chip though, and they were fantastic! So much fun despite having sweat flung at me from overheated individuals quickly removing their shirts . Ay yi yi...it was definitley a steam sauna in there.
