Randall: what are the bottom 5? maybe we can agree on the 16 seeds
or maybe it's best to save those for last
9:58 PM me: good point - so we completed eight seeds, right?
Randall: let's stay positive... next four
me: let me make sure I'm up to date on my seeds
Randall: ok
good idea
9:59 PM me: ok - o
i'm straight - so go onto 9 or try the bottom
10:00 PM let's just see what we would come up with - for the bottom five - if it's disjointed, we'll forget about it

mark it - let's go back to 9th seeds
10:05 PM Randall: yep
me: eight
10:06 PM Randall: we each pick two, and unless one of use really disagrees, and unless the other really diagrees, we'll go with that
we'll do the same thing for the 9's
since 8+9 are so close
me: actually - we're on nines - but I'm with you
Randall: there's really no difference between the fouth 8 and fifth 9
oh ok
two and two then
10:07 PM me: The BendsLucky
10:08 PM Randall: didn't the bends already make it?
i like lucky
me: no - i don't think it did
10:09 PM Randall: ok.. those two, stop whispering and
10:10 PM where you end and i begin
me: ok - i'll barter Stop Whispering for a Tourist 12th seed
Trickster, rather
10:11 PM Randall: fair enough
me: sold.
ok
Randall: what seed now?
me: 10
10:12 PM Randall: two and two?
me: let's go with picking the best remaining from each album
if we both agree upon it - it's there
Randall: ok
me: Pablo

Not in a million years would the NCAA's selection committee allow for such transparency.

You guys are underestimating "Talk Show Host" to the point that I'm not sure it's even on your iPods. As it's a Bends era song that would have sounded at home on Kid A, it's one of the pivotal songs in their entire catalog.

Posted by: Jeff K at May 1, 2007 12:27 PM

Listening to it right now. I admit, it could have been a thirteen seed or maybe higher - but it's kind of uneventful - it has occasional moments of soaring strings - but I don't think it's a really pivotal song. It doesn't really grab you, or, rather, it doesn't really grab me.

Just so we're comparing apples to apples, how long is the one you're listening to? There's a 4:17 version from the Romeo soundtrack, and a tweaked out 4:40 mix that was a b-side to "Street Spirit." I don't think they are so different that you're opinion would be totally changed, but it does make a difference, and we should be on equal rhetorical footing at least...

I've been listening to the "Street Spirit" version, the entire single, infact, and I now think that "Talk Show Host" is the weakest track on the record.

Posted by: Randall Monty at May 2, 2007 08:31 AM

monty, when i saw this post, i was immediatly rushed to itunes to combat what you had just said. sadly, i had forgotten what was on that single. street spirit is an amazing song. bishop's robes is one of my personal favorite radiohead songs. so, sadly, i agree. though i do think that talh show host is a great song.

apparently i have a lisp. talh show host. he he. good times. jesus, and i mispelled immediately. sorry people, just woke up.

Posted by: dan vaughn at May 2, 2007 09:52 AM

You guys are all wrong. I'll save the in depth reasoning for the appropriate time, but rest assured, totally wrong.

Posted by: Jeff at May 2, 2007 07:31 PM

I'm confused: is "it's a Bends era song that would have sounded at home on Kid A" a compliment or not?

Posted by: Randall Monty at May 2, 2007 07:52 PM

If you subscribe to the premise that Kid A > the Bends, then yes.

Posted by: Jeff K at May 2, 2007 08:40 PM

So it's their best Bends-era song?

Posted by: Randall Monty at May 2, 2007 10:52 PM

Not necessarily, as this was the first toe in eventually more rewarding waters, whereas the Bends was the band firing on all cylinders in a different style. TSH is clearly better than the entirety of Pablo Honey to say the least though. Like I said, I'll save the whole argument for the proper place.
