White Stripes kick off zany tour | A guide

The White Stripes' 2007 world tour is not like most tours. For starters they are performing at every Canadian province and territory. This includes Iqaluit, a town near the Arctic circle with a population of just over 6,000. Other non-traditional venues include a gigantic German gas tank and a historic Birmingham furnace. Last night the tour got underway at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. Pic below.

After the jump a comprehensive look at the Canadian dates for this most ambitious tour. I have to believe a documentary is being produced in conjunction with the shows.
Europe:
05-31 Barcelona, Spain - Primavera Sound Festival
06-01 Nuerburgring, Germany - Rock Am Ring Festival
06-02 Nurnberg, Germany - Rock Im Park Festival
06-04 Vienna, Austria - Gasometer
Vienna's 19th century Gasometers stopped performing gas duties in 1984. They languished over the years as movie settings for Dalton-era Bond movies as well playing host for Vienna raves. In 2001 a revitalization project completed transforming the structures into mixed use zones of living, working, entertainment and shopping. Fascinating idiosyncrasy, awesome place for live music.
06-06 Rome, Italy - Tenda Strisce
06-07 Milan, Italy - Idroscalo
06-09 Lisbon, Portugal - Alive Festival
06-11 Paris, France - Zenith
06-14 London, England - Hyde Park (O2 Wireless Festival)
06-15 Leeds, England - Harewood House (O2 Wireless Festival)
'Roo:
06-17 Manchester, TN - Bonnaroo Festival
Hippies and Hipsters coexisting peacefully at America's largest top tier festival.
Jack and Meg do Canada:
06-24 Burnaby, British Columbia - Deer Lake Park
Burnaby is technically a Vancouver show. A city I've never visited as much as it intrigues me. Ranked third best city in the world in terms of quality of living in 2006. Nearby the epic ski resort of Whistler-Blackcomb and a growing film industry that scares Hollywood more and more with each passing day.
06-25 Whitehorse, Yukon - Yukon Arts Centre
Population of 24,151 accounts for more than 75% of the territory's population. Whitehorse is the capital of Yukon Territory and known as the driest Canadian city.
06-26 Yellowknife, Northwest Territories - Shorty Brown Multiplex Arena
Pop. 18,700. In 1978 The Soviet Nuclear powered satellite Cosmos 954 crashed to earth near Yellowknife. Located due south of the Arctic Circle, the city receives many visitors for viewing the Aurora Borealis.
06-27 Iqaluit, Nunavut - Arctic Winter Games Arena
Pop. 6,184. Iqaluit is a town built around a WWII-era US airbase and is the smallest city hosting Jack & Meg. Average low temperature during the month of January: -23 degrees Fahrenheit; Average high for June: 44 degrees. Few if any trees grow in Iqaluit. The Arctic Winter Games Arena seats 2,500.
06-29 Calgary, Alberta - Pengrowth Saddledome
Nestled 50 mi east of the Canadian Rockies Calgary shares similarities to Denver in terms of proximity to the mountains and a high plains, front range topography. Though at an elevation of 3,440 ft above sea level, it's substantially lower than Denver's famous mile-high perch.
06-30 Edmonton, Alberta - Shaw Convention Center
Population wise, Edmonton is the largest metro area and northernmost city in North America. It also boasts the distinction of having North America's largest mall and the first mosque on our fair continent.
07-01 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - TCU Place
Merry Swankster advises traveling to this July ushering show for the one two punch of cool Canadian words you'll get to say when retelling the story of that time you saw the White Stripes in 2007. Saskatooooooon!
07-02 Winnipeg, Manitoba - MTS Centre
A resident of Winnipeg is known as a Winnipegger. Winnipeggers live in the coldest large city in the world, yet lost their NHL team to Phoenix - the hottest city in the US.
07-03 Thunder Bay, Ontario - Community Auditorium
The city of Thunder Bay (formerly known as Fort William and Port Arthur before merging thunderously in 1970) sits on a major bay at the head of Lake Superior. Its history defined by the strategic port just north of the American border. During the American Revolution the city served as a tax haven for traders avoiding American taxes. Does the legacy of evading taxes live on for Duluth college students willing to make the 190 mile trek across the border for duty free libations? I like to think the leaders of tomorrow are all resourceful like.
07-05 Toronto, Ontario - Molson Amphitheatre
Canada's largest city is the most uninteresting from this list of more out of the way locales. Umm..they have the CN Tower, Blue Jays, and clean streets?
07-06 Montreal, Quebec - Bell Centre
Montreal is the 2nd largest French-speaking city in the world (trumped only by Paris - haw haw haw). Partying in Montreal is a dizzying affair with infinite options for debauchery. World famous skin joints line Sainte-Catherine street and rowdy college bars seemingly everywhere keep the natives entertained. Thousands of border-jumping US students can also be counted on making lost-weekend pilgrimages from upstate New York universities. Lest I mention the thriving music scene. You may have heard of the indie band Arcade Fire? Ironically, but not surprising considering Kevin Barnes involvement, Of Montreal is not of Montreal.
07-07 London, Ontario - John Labatt Centre
Roughly located across Lake Erie from Cleveland and halfway between Detroit and Toronto. Locals refer to the John Labatt Centre as the JLC. If you get lost now you know. I assume they serve plenty of not-so great Labatt. So there's that.
07-08 Ottawa, Ontario - LeBreton Flats Park (Ottawa Bluesfest)
Capital of Canadialand! Ottawa's municipal status is a special administrative district within the province of Ontario. The city has the highest number of PhDs per capita in Canada. Smarty pants and politicians - dinner parties must be insufferable. Bluesfest, Ottawa's annual music festival, takes place in the streets of downtown. Cool.
07-10 Moncton, New Brunswick - Moncton Coliseum Arena
M.C.A is so bad ass that it refers itself as both coliseum and arena. Also the only place in the world where deer actively participate in local politics.
07-11 Charlottetown, Price Edward Island - Charlottetown Civic Centre
Wikipedia says: The island's landscape is pastoral: rolling hills, pristine forests, reddish white sand beaches, ocean coves and the famous red soil have given Prince Edward Island a reputation as a province of outstanding natural beauty."
Prince Edward Island almost became part of the US when it was mulling future options in the late 1860s. While Canada was busy creating itself, Prince Edward Island, still a colony of the United Kingdom, began talks with a US delegation before Canada's first Prime Minister negotiated for it to join Canada in 1873. Oh to be a fly on the wall in that decision process. "USA or Canada - I just can't decide!"
07-13 Halifax, Nova Scotia - Cunard Centre
The Cunard Centre, part of a larger redevelopment of harbor environs, is an old cargo shed renovated into a new multi-use facility on the Halifax waterfront.
07-14 Glace Bay, Nova Scotia - Savoy Theatre
Suspect coincidence in the color scheme department. Whoever booked this tour scored big with the Savoy's out of the box stage design.
07-16 St. John's, Newfoundland - Mile One Center
At the extreme Eastern coast of North America, St. John is south and slightly west of Greenland. Its geographical location and relative proximity to Europe makes it a treasured spot for history buffs of European exploration. Site of the oldest road in North America.
