Monolith this weekend

With Merry Swankster's Denver contingent still reeling from last night's terrific Okkervil River show, we quickly find ourselves just hours away from Colorado's most anticipated summer event. Today is Red Rocks' big moment in the bright indie rock sun. I understand the layout of the five stages will encompass unique and efficient methods of the Red Rocks arena. From a stage erected at the peak of the amphitheater's top concession area, to a few indoors at the visitor center located in the bowels of the prehistoric rock, and of course the famous main stage at the base of the giant slanted sandstone structure. Sounds like a lot of hiking...bring comfortable shoes people.
It'll be interesting to see how the out-of-towners manage their predictable bad decision making with the potentially troublesome cocktail of sunshine, heavy boozing, and hill climbs at an elevation well over a mile above sea level, 6200 feet to be exact! Remember the golden rule of outdoor festivals - at least one glass of water for every two beers - because nobody wants to be the guy who eats shit before seeing the headliner. Not only a big time party foul, but completely inexcusable when this mean risking the opportunity to see the Flaming Lips bring their always reliable circus atmosphere to close the festivities.
One may consider filling the black-out quote in other ways. Tonight when the band - nobody-asked, but are volunteering an answer to the question of - what ever happened to - Cake fill the headliner slot on the main stage. What else do you expect when your claim to fame is reluctantly crouched at the starting line? What do I know though, maybe they are great live.
Whether you find yourself tooling away at school, work, or just waking up in another haze of confusion (today is Friday, its September, you are on the Internet), know that Monolith starts today and all you need to do is show up. Take a gander at the MP3 clusterbombing in this post as a way to whet the appetite. Your welcome.
