Video: High Places - "New Grace" live @ the Market Hotel
Pitchfork.tv, which I think we can all agree has turned out to be pretty rad, has done us the great service of posting an entire set by MS's Brooklyn favorites, High Places. It's the very set that was the featured silver lining in my controversial rain cloud of a review of the night in question as it turns out.
Enjoy here, and then further enjoy safely turning away without your shirt reeking of Camel Lights.

I like their music, but am I correct in thinking that their live show is 90% pre-recorded stuff? Even the vocals sound suspiciously identical to the recordings.. I think there might be a bit of live stuff coming through but it seems to be mostly energetic miming. Not to knock it, because they seem to make it work, and it's pretty much what a lot of those loop\sample based groups do.

Having seen them three or four times, including one of the shows I put together I don't think that's the case. If you watch the whole Pitchfork set, you'll notice that even when Mary talks, the treated mic gives her spoken words that same echo. I really don't know what Rob is doing sometimes, so he could be manipulating loops, but some of it comes from a live drum pad of some sort. The reason it sounds so close to the records I suspect is that they bring their own PA with them to every gig, go there's not much modulation from one show to the next. Also, the P-fork editing narrowly misses being synched in some places I think...

The music is made up of their own samples (they create) so maybe that is why they sound simular. One thing though, is live it sounds way bigger and huger. This recording is obviously through their board, which would of course make it sound really simular. Voacally I can tell that it is different. Live it's so freaking full and hard hitting, especially when they use their own system.

Also, the last show they played there last Friday was smoke free in the main room! Kudos!
