This just in: RIAA still a bunch of jerks

[via Wired and the Consumerist]

Long story short: the Recording Industry Association of American had taken a family to court for allegedly illegally downloading music. Unfortunately for the RIAA, their case was less than stellar, lacking such trivialities like "evidence" (for instance, Warner couldn't prove that the family had downloaded anything), and the case was in all likelihood set to be dismissed. Next, the RIAA voluntarily dropped their claim, only to later raise the same complaint against the same family. The second time around however, the defendant was filed under a different name ("the Does"). This last tactic ensures that the new trial will be placed before a different judge.

The blog Recording Industry vs. The People provides a great rundown of the developments of this case.
