'Flash Back
the Go! Team - "Ladyflash"
The above being a video from 2004, this is hardly hot off the presses. But the sad You Tube-less world of four years ago didn't allow it to spread as virally and persistently as we've come to expect. Or at least that's my solipsistic rationale for why I only saw it for the first time about a week ago.
I've always loved "Ladyflash," so this isn't a case of a video making me re-evaluate a unappreciated song exactly. It's just that, as catchy and affecting as I always found it, it sounded stitched together, the product of dazzling studio work. That impression of collage was intentional (and accentuated by the video). With that aura of cut and paste, it's tough to know what's sampled, and what is original. I guess I always wrongly assumed that the killer vocal hook was lifted from some bygone R&B record from years past. I know that shouldn't make such a difference, but it does. I admire both DJ Shadow and ESG, but I know which one I find more loveable. I mean, that's a killer vocal part. I'm sorry that I never did the required search to discover that the lovely Ninja was its original performer. With a visual in mind, I'm now sorry I never made it out to see their live show either. Has anyone out there in blog land caught their act? Is it as tantalizing a never land as this lovely video suggests?
