Denver/Boulder: Shows this week | 8.18 - 8.24

This week is loaded with genre specific events. Hip hop heads on Saturday can look forward to Rock the Bells with Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Mos Def, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface, Spank Rock, The Pharcyde, and others. Fans with harder driving, punk persuasions have Red Rocks all to themselves on Friday for NOFX, Circle Jerks, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones with Bouncing Souls, Circle Jerks, Street Dogs and local favorites, Frontside Five.

DNC related events hit the radar beginning next weekend with greats from New Orleans performing a benefit show at the Fillmore to raise funds for Friends of New Orleans, a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership group supporting the city's rebuilding. Ticket price is a hefty $500, limited tickets are available via Live Nation. Performers include Randy Newman, Henry Butler, Tab Benoit, George Porter, Jr, and many others from this important incubator of American music.

For fans of music without a spelled out theme, new Denver band Good Housekeeping plays Larimer Lounge on Saturday. "Hanging in the Hollow" is a wonderful find and is streaming on their Myspace, which took me a while to find since two other bands in the world share what is evidently an extraordinarily conventional band name. Not to mention a testament to the global appeal of the venerable ladies' publication. (Turkish Good Housekeeping, and a British version compete with the Denver group.) "Hanging in the Hollow" is pronounced by its breezy 60s girl-pop harmonies and rhythmic leasing from bombastic, porny 70s funk. Synths and a mighty Fender Rhodes also appear prominently.

Oh and My Morning Jacket plays Red Rocks Thursday. They're good live.
