The Mars Volta, Live @ Monolith, 9.13.2009

The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta were a controversial pick from the minute organizers announced them as Sunday night headliners. I can say this with authority from the mostly negative responses directed at the festival's twitter site. That not so impressive authority I just flaunted should be chewed on with an equally huge grain of salt as I am making a conclusion from twitter posts, yes that just happened. Still, quasi-controversial assumptions from a small but vocal sample still means something. Add me to the mix. Underwhelmed is one way to put it. After suffering through about 45 minutes of The Mars Volta I can close the book on my initial thoughts and validate them as prescient.

It's hard to watch a band play up all the excess of Led Zeppelin without much of the substance. We left early but I'm still left with one burning question: did that gong get used?
