THE LIST: Mwaahhh, the French Champagne

Far, far, far removed from Citizen Kane and the Third Man, Orson Wells received some money to laud a brand of champagne. It didn't go well.

What will go well, however, is Merry Swankster's new, recurring segment - THE LIST. Here, we will try to pick one song - our favorite or most noteworthy - that contributes to a specific list. For our first entry - we've selected our favorite French song. Most of us (or, at least, me) will try to be cheeky and not go for the obvious (Daft Punk, Air, Serge, etc.) - so consider this a list of either our favorite songs or a rare song we want to bring to your attention. The results after the jump.

Remember when: Chemical Brothers

The new Chemical Brothers album came out. Unless you wish to pay $10-$17 to get your vocal chords to express "meh," you might want to stay away. Rather than review the album, I've decided to create a list of the Chemical Brothers best ten songs from proper albums, and its worst song (actually two). Take me to the mat... or shed... or mat-shed in the comments.

1) Setting Sun - Dig Your Own Hole
Just such a massive song - so unlike anything else around.

2) It Doesn't Matter - Dig Your Own Hole
Seemingly monotone, but the beauty is buried

3) Let Forever Be - Surrender
Maybe Gallaghers should have ditched Oasis for ChemBros

4) Block Rockin' Beats - Dig Your Own Hole
Joint of 97 summer - before they started saying "joint?"

5) Hey Boy Hey Girl - Surrender
Dance party staple since '00

6) Asleep From Day - Surrender
Yea Mazzy Star

7) Music: Response - Surrender
Can't go wrong if you sample Misdemeanor

8) The Private Psychedelic Reel - Dig Your Own Hole
T
his whole album is a head-smashing good time

9) Get Up On It Like This - Dig Your Own Hole
Who needs lyrics?

10) Star Guitar - Come With Us
Some people will have this higher, but it's not as exciting as other songs

WORST: It Came From Africa/Lost in the K Hole

A much better 1998

In Jeff's recent retrohump post (the Cardigans), he posted a link to the top 40 songs of 1998. Mylordsisitbad. Going through iTunes (on my laptop, which does not have my full music collection), I think I can come up with a better list. Keep in mind - I'm operating under the premise that these would have to be "radio" songs (sorry Neutral Milk Hotel). What would you add?

Everything is Everything - Lauryn Hill
Sylvie - St. Etienne
Kelly Watch the Stars - Air (or any of the first three songs from Moon Safari)
Angel - Massive Attack
Simple Things - Belle & Sebastian
The Sea - Morcheeba
Malibu - Hole
Wonderful Life - Black Box Recorder
Goddess on the Highway - Mercury Rev
Life in Mono - Mono
Respiration - Blackstar
We Are the Boys - Pulp
A Question Mark - Elliott Smith
Tumbling Down - Venus In Furs Sndtrk.
April Fools - Rufus Wainwright
