Video: tUnE-yArDs – “Bizness”

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

My love of Ms. Merrill Garbus aka tUnE-yArDs is derived equally from the primal intensity she uses to propel her music as well as the honest artistic weirdness that permeates everything she does.

In this new video for “Bizness” she enlists a classroom of adorable children (with one notable pint-sized doppelganger) and a troupe of performance artists to run with this unique aesthetic: It’s all facial contortion and freakout dancing with a color scheme of striped pastels.

PS22 Chorus covering Ariel Pink – “Round and Round”

What is more reassuring here – the kids’ pure enthusiasm or the power of a good chorus? Do we have to choose?  No.

John Denver – “Dancing With the Mountains”

From John Denver’s 1980 album Autograph comes this pretty terrible song with a terrifically terrible video (of unknown age). The central mountains of Colorado got walloped with snow yesterday so I found this to be an appropriate way to break our self-imposed 2011 hiatus. Now if I could find an appropriate way to get this crap melody out of my head…

LCD Soundystem tour :: video blog

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

LCD played Denver last night.  I feel like a I need a few days to recover.  Hot show with crazy energy all around.  Today while perusing online for clips of the Fillmore show, I found these two videos.  Footage from the LCD bus and behind the scenes clips and funny tales from the road told by a likable and wonderfully mustached dude. I vaguely remember talking to a guy on my way out who was also wonderfully mustached and recording the departing masses with a flip camera.  Heh.

“Vanderlyle Crybaby” all the way unplugged

The National – “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks” – Fillmore, Denver 10.18.10

This you don’t see everyday.  If ever.  A band naked, so to speak, before their fans.  In this case The National at the foot of the Fillmore stage, completely acoustic.  No mics. Chill inducing. An amazing moment. The kind that you keep the presence of mind to understand how special it is.

Towards the beginning of the night I wondered why the audience at the Fillmore seemed so reserved.  By this point in the night, during their last encore, I finally figured it out.  The mixture of romantic awe and earnest heartfelt connection with Matt Berninger’s unique cadence and the band’s deliberate loveliness caused polite reverence.  A surprising intimacy in a relatively large venue.

As if the picture wasn’t perfect enough, the chorus repeats the words:

“All the very best of us / String ourselves up for love”
